We watched this episode with athlete-host expectations (read: low). But Ronda Rousey did fine. The show didn’t stretch her too much but then again, she was in most sketches. There are three clean clips I’d put in the Fine for Kids category, one in the Word of Caution and all the rest in the Definitely Not for Kids, or after the kids go to bed category. Here are the clean sketches with Ronda Rousey:
Fine for Kids
Ronda Rousey Monologue – Ronda Rousey nails her first SNL monologue with a little help from her coach (Kenan Thompson), Justin Bieber (Kate McKinnon) and Selena Gomez. Best lines: “Everybody loves cake! And she knew it!” and “You can sleep during Update.”
Football Party – Two friends (Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney) struggle to understand party etiquette when they’re invited to a coworker’s (Ronda Rousey) football viewing party. Another sketch where Beck and Kyle are socially awkward. They’re just so good at it. Clean and awkward. Just perfect.
Screen Guild Awards – All of the Best Actor nominees (Taran Killam, Pete Davidson, Beck Bennett, Bobby Moynihan, Jon Rudnitsky) at the Screen Guild Awards share something in common. A pointed sketch about the Oscars this year. Each nomination becomes more absurd, as the white man’s role is smaller and smaller compared to a black actor who should have received the nomination. Predictable, but worth it. I debated putting this in Word of Caution, but I think it’s just a good conversation starter with your kids. Have they heard the controversy #OscarsSoWhite? What do they think? How are you talking it through with them?
Word of Caution
Palin Endorsement Cold Open – Sarah Palin (Tina Fey) endorses Donald Trump (Darrell Hammond) for president at an Iowa campaign stop. Palin gets “too blue” even for Trump.
Definitely Not for Kids
Bland Man – Seven women (Vanessa Bayer, Kate McKinnon, Ronda Rousey, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, Sasheer Zamata, Selena Gomez) compete for the affections of a bland man named Dan (Taran Killam).
At the Club – Three men (Jay Pharoah, Taran Killam, Beck Bennett) attempt to pick up three women (Ronda Rousey, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant) with a revealing rap.
City Council with Ronda Rousey – Members of a city council (Cecily Strong, Bobby Moynihan) contend with the strange requests of the townspeople (Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, Kyle Mooney, Kenan Thompson, Ronda Rousey, Pete Davidson).
The Super Crew – The Super Crew (Ronda Rousey, Jay Pharoah, Leslie Jones, Pete Davidson, Taran Killam, Kenan Thompson, Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong, Sasheer Zamata, Jon Rudnitsky) arrives to save the city, but some members prove more useful than others. One super hero’s power is gay-dar. Simple premise, but the Super Crew was not super funny.
Teacher Trial with Ronda Rousey – Gavin Daly (Pete Davidson) testifies about having an inappropriate sexual relationship with his teachers (Ronda Rousey, Cecily Strong) – happily.
Love Struck – When the popular kids (Beck Bennett, Vanessa Bayer, Kate McKinnon, Sasheer Zamata, Jon Rudnitsky) try to play a trick on the new girl (Ronda Rousey), she turns the tables on them.Like what you just read?
