Larry David on Saturday Night Live was another one for the grown ups to keep to themselves. It was a good episode, Larry did a fine job, even a great job-like his animatronic FBI guy. He was pretty amazing. And the introvert in me totally nodded approval at his monologue’s “one of life’s greatest pleasures is leaving places” statement. Kind of reminded me of loner comedians.
FINE FOR KIDS
Songwriting Class – Russ (Larry David) has a hard time understanding the teacher’s (Pete Davidson) lesson on rhyming lyrics. This might be the only “clean” sketch and it was terrible. in a disappointingly boring sort of way.
DEFINITELY NOT FOR KIDS
Bern Your Enthusiasm – Despite his friends’ (Bobby Moynihan, Cecily Strong, Jay Pharoah) best efforts, Sen. Bernie Sanders (Larry David) keeps finding ways to upset voters (Leslie Jones, Aidy Bryant) in Iowa. Some language.
Steam Ship – When a ship runs aground, the women and children are loaded onto lifeboats first – until two passengers (Larry David, Sen. Bernie Sanders) voice their objections. Language.
Monologue – Host Larry David discusses the differences between being a schmuck and being a prick and admits he’s well aware women only date him because he has money and is on TV.
Message from Ted Cruz – Sen. Ted Cruz (Taran Killam) explains how he managed to win the Iowa caucus despite his many off-putting qualities.
Last Call with Larry David – A bartender (Kenan Thompson) pays witness to the sad hookup between Sheila Sovage (Kate McKinnon) and Ace Chuggins (Larry David). Good Garfield line, but never a really great sketch.
Peyton & Cam – Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning (Taran Killam) and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (Kenan Thompson) put their own twist on “Ebony and Ivory.” Could have stayed clean but got weird about the Papa John’s guy.
FBI Simulator – A training exercise puts an agent’s (Kenan Thompson) ability to distinguish between a threat (Beck Bennett, Leslie Jones, Jon Rudnitsky) and a harmless civilian (Aidy Bryant, Larry David, Vanessa Bayer, Bobby Moynihan) to the test. Probably the best of the night. All of the animatronics, including still-newbie Jon Rudnitsky, did a really impressive job. More language.
Totinos – When you need to keep your hungry guys (Larry David, Kyle Mooney, Jon Rudnitsky, Jay Pharoah, Pete Davidson, Beck Bennett) fed, there’s Totinos pizza rolls. At first, it feels like one we saw last year, or any other commercial Vanessa Bayer’s done, but stick with it. Although, don’t share for the creep factor.Like what you just read?
